About Amarjeet
Amarjeet immigrated to Canada in 1999 with her parents and settled in the neighbourhood surrounding Jane and Finch. She attended Westview Centennial Secondary School where she received the Citizenship Award for her leadership and involvement in the community. She was also one of the thirteen students chosen to represent her school in the prestigious York University Summer Science program, which she excelled in by ranking first, setting an example for others and making her school proud. She successfully completed the Yorkwoods Safe Neighbourhood project and facilitated many youth programs in community centres. She later moved on to study Political Science and Life Sciences at the University of Toronto at Scarborough and has called Scarborough East her home for the past 2 years.
A hard working and passionate leader in the community, Amarjeet has amassed a wealth of experience. No stranger to public service, she has worked within City Hall to represent the youth of Toronto in her role as an executive member on the Toronto Youth Cabinet, the official voice of youth at City Hall. Her other accomplishments include: being elected twice as member of the Board of Directors for U of T Scarborough's Student Union, an organization representing 9000 students managing a budget of 4 million; her role as President managing a budget of $15,000 along with continuously motivating and supervising the performance of a 20 member executive team of the largest academic student-run science organization; and the winner of Scarborough City Idol, Amarjeet was also recently recognized as a "Promising Tomorrow Leader".
Amarjeet is someone who loves to take initiative and was the organizer of the Community Volunteer Income tax program, assisting hundreds of domestic and international students with their taxes. She has been very active in the past few political campaigns and currently holds the position of the Provincial Youth Representative for the NDP Pickering Scarborough East riding Association. Seeing her passion and commitment she was also appointed to the Youth Committee of the Canadian National Exhibition Association.
Amarjeet is someone who gives true meaning to the phrase "beyond the calls of duty". Although she has seen herself at the helm of various leadership positions, she has always put the interests of the group at the forefront. "You cannot be a politician if you do not know how to be a public servant" is something Amarjeet commonly says and wishes to practice.
She is warm and sincere; puts her best foot forward in whatever she does and in running for city council, she is definitely giving her very best to ward 43, working relentlessly to lobby for greater reform that would certainly benefit the community.
Although one of the youngest women in this election, she is highly-motivated and is one that is known for her resilience in the face of adversity, leaving no stones unturned in realizing her aspirations and aims. She is one who is held in high regard by her elders, colleagues, and peers, and her affable and jovial character certainly makes her a favourite among many. She is much more than your average city councillor-she is a neighbour, a friend, an ear to hear you out.
